hey oscar+gar is possible

hey i was wondering if a gar would be compatable with an oscar my oscar is abou 12 inches

generally, yes, if the gar is alot smaller i would worry.

Oh ok I have been told many times both answers some say it wont work some say ya. But i think its gonna have to be a try it thing.

they will get along fine in a 125g or larger.


What are others' reasons for saying it WON'T work?

I agree that as long as the gar is large enough to dicourage bullying by the oscar and not more than twice as long as the oscar to start with, there should be no problem.

Id say theyll get along ok, but keep the gar fed pretty good. I had a gar awhile ago an he ate n killed 2 fish, a green terror an a small pike. Plus he killed a 5" Dempsey.

i have 2 oscars about 6 inches long and a gar slightly over a foot long.. they dont mess with eachother.. the gar will move when the other fish are eating and the gar also push the pacu around. its funny.

I know a guy who kept an oscar and gar in a 29g...they seemed alright together but they were probably dead inside anyway, I would not recommend a tank that small of course for either fish together or alone. I would only try it in a very large well fed tank.
