Howdy,

How do you all keep your tanks so clear? I do water changes on the frequent, and I have a good filter my water always gets cloudy in a bout 3 days..And since I have OCD I do a water change so its clear again...I miss my cichlids, I had 2 oscars, a Jack and GT. But my new landlord wouldn't let me bring the 75g tank, so I had to get rid of them =( I did however move out and bought a 10g for now. I have a Jewel and a JD in there along with some Tiger Barbs and a Red Tailed Shark. The Jewel Rules the tank, the poor JD won't eat hasn't eaten since I put it in there. What should I do?

You are way over stocked in that 10g, and 3 days of clear water is all you are going to get. A 10g tank is not nearly enough for one JD, let alone all of the other fish in there.

Try to convince your landlord to let you bring in a bigger tank...maybe a 55. A 75 is not a huge tank, so I don't see what the landlords issue is.

What type of filter are you running?

Is the water cloudy and white? Sounds to me like you're overstocked in a bad way. If you can only have the 10g for now, I'd consider trading all those fish back into your LFS. If you want to keep cichlids in there, have a look at the african shell dwellers or maybe apistogrammas.

I agree. That tank is waaaaay too small and overstocked for you to have enough water stability. Little water volume means that nitrates, ammonia, uneaten food will quickly accumulate and dirty your water. Definitely try to go for a 55g!

well for one the tank may not be overstocked. need to know the size of the fish. if he has all 1.5 inch dinks then thats just like having 4-5 feeder goldfish in there. if this is the case we need to know your filtration and how old your carbon is. new carbon does wonders to keep a tank clear. but even if your fish are dinks they will grow fast and need a larger tank pretty soon.

I always have a bit of polyester fiber in my filter. it polishes out fine particles in the water. Essentially its the same thing they use in kidney dialysis machines. It traps small particles well and really clears up the water fast. When it gets dirty, just throw it away and replace with a new piece.

Yes the Jewel is about 1.5 inches same with the JD. The Tiger barbs are about 2 inches. and the red tail is around 1.5 inches as well...I have an aqua clear 20 on there as my filter. My carbon is new only about a week old for that filter..I know it's overstocked I was going to do that until I got my 75 gallon in July when I buy my house....I may end up giving back the barbs though...They are massive and really active..

Yes it is really over crowded. The JD is about 1.5 inches and the Jewel is 2 inches. The Tiger Barbs are 2 inches too...I have an Aquaclear 20 on the tank, with brand new carbon..
