Hey People

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I use quilt batting from Walmart for water polishing. It's only a fraction of the price of water polishing filter material from the lfs...I think $6.99 for a king-size quilt portion. Don't use carbon in your filter, take it all out immeditately.

As far as tank inhabitants, you should research what can be humanely kept in a 10 gallon tank...like the betta in your avatar.

I bet the problem of white water is phosphates.

The problem with the landlord is easy. Tell him that a setup 55 gallon tanks weighs about 550lbs. That is the same as having 3 people stand next to each other. If that amount of wieght is going to compromise your floor then it is not up to code.

You are way over stocked in that 10g, and 3 days of clear water is all you are going to get. A 10g tank is not nearly enough for one JD, let alone all of the other fish in there.

Try to convince your landlord to let you bring in a bigger tank...maybe a 55. A 75 is not a huge tank, so I don't see what the landlords issue is.

What type of filter are you running?

Landlords dont like the fact that from time to time aquariums leak and screw up the floors. They don't normally learn about the screwed up floors until the tenants are long gone and hard to get a hold of.

Howdy,

How do you all keep your tanks so clear? I do water changes on the frequent, and I have a good filter my water always gets cloudy in a bout 3 days..And since I have OCD I do a water change so its clear again...I miss my cichlids, I had 2 oscars, a Jack and GT. But my new landlord wouldn't let me bring the 75g tank, so I had to get rid of them =( I did however move out and bought a 10g for now. I have a Jewel and a JD in there along with some Tiger Barbs and a Red Tailed Shark. The Jewel Rules the tank, the poor JD won't eat hasn't eaten since I put it in there. What should I do?

1) Obviously you need a bigger tank so I won't say any more on this.

2) If the tank is hazy it could just be blooms from cycling. Or it could be over feeding. Make sure you are feeding only what they can eat in 5 minutes 2 or 3 times a day (while they are young).

3) Try offering some cubes. My JD refuses to eat anything except cube stuffs (like shrimp). Once he can get a good grip on the cube he takes off with it. Fish are funny like that.

Well I put the JD in my friends Tank he has my old 75 gallon hexagon. So I hope he take great care of my JD. I will have to check on the Tiger barbs and Jewel later. but thanks for all of the advice on keeping the water clear. i will hit you all up when I get my 75 setup...

Yes the betta is Bruce my betta. He is awesome he is in a 1 gallon tank, and lives with 2 snails and eats freeze dried worms.....

You should have cycled your tank, which you did not it seems. It takes about 3 weeks for aquarium water to achieve stable beneficial bacteria cycle. You need a much bigger aquarium for the fish you have purchased. they will inevitably die. I suggest reading some articles on Aquarium cycling and care and info pages on the fish you purchase BEFORE buying any new fish. Good luck and welcome to MFK
