So I didn't know there was an introduce forum. To all I say hello. I am partaking in my first aquarium and am pretty clueless. I found the tank I want, a 55gal but the setup and fish selection has me scratching my head. Submersions filters canister filters. Let your tank settle for a day before you put your fish in, then someone told me a whole month! Any sound advice would be greatly appreciated!:nilly:

Welcome to MFK! and 1-2 weeks for cycling is more than enough.
what are you looking to put in it?

Welcome to MFK!

It all depends on the type of cycling that you will be doing.
Most people recommend natural cycling by adding pure amonnia in the water and having beneficial bacteria grow naturally. For this you will need a Master test kit and some time. Should take less than a month though on a tank that size.

I would recommend Seachem Stability, many people swear by it and it works. You put this in the water the same day you add fish in, with the correct dose of course, and you should be fine.

Have you bought the tank yet?

Thank you!! I want to start small and simple as I have only had a beta fish in a bowl before lol. From what I am seeing and reading I like the American Cichlids. The Discus and Angelfish seem to be my favorite so far. I want fish I can mix smaller fish with. Tetra or guppies maybe.

Angelfish will be your best bet then, discus are usually pretty pricey (over $40 per fish) and are very sensitive to water conditions.

You could do a tank with Angelfish, tetras and guppies if thats what you like.

Is it a for sure buy? Like did you put money down on it or something?

Just thought you should check out your local craigslist or even the For sale section of this forum. You are at a great advantage living in Cali, there are many great deals there on tanks everyday.

Brand new a 55 gallon with stand top lights and filter will cost you probably about $300.

I am sure you can find a deal on a used one in very good conditions in your section for under $100, just something to think about.

Oh wow! Thanks for that! No I have not put money down yet. The one I saw was close to $500!!! No filter or anything! It was a corner unit though. Still a rip off though huh?

YES definately a ripoff!

If i were you i would look everyday through CL and this forum until you find a deal that you like. It would also give you alot more time to read through the forum and learn.
