I went on vacation for a few weeks and when I got back my ammonia is at 0.25ppm. I know its not that high but it's always at 0 before I left for vacation. This happened because I told my dad to watch the aquarium, and he didn't know that he shouldn't clean out my canister filters!!

Well I'm doing water changes since yesterday (about 25%) and lowered the pH a little but my ammonia keeps climbing up little by little. My question is: Is it okay to use an ammonia detoxifier? This will lock up the ammonia and convert it to a non-toxic form. But will my tank be able to cycle when I use ammonia detoxifier? What do you guys think I should do?

depending on what kind of fish are in there you may be fine a mini cycle will take place, but i would rather do that then use chemicals but i have never used any of the ammonia detoxifiers before.

Prime is a great ammonia neutralizer because it still allows your bio-filter to do it's thing.

Prime is also a dechlorinator. I was thinking about getting a product that only concentrates on removing ammonia. Products that just detoxify ammonia seem a lot cheaper.

5 mL of Prime treats 50 gallons of water. That means the 250 mL bottle (about $8) treats 2500 gallons. Considering its superior performance, it is a bargain at twice the price IMHO.

How's your nitrite?

Does anyone know any products that only concentrates on ammonia and allows the tank to cycle at the same time?

Large-scale water changes will decrease it dramatically, but you will need to do it every day until cycling is complete.

yeh i guess you're right.

my nitrites are at 0. nitrates at 25 ppm. my nitrates are at 25 ppm because it was like that when my tank was cycled. i'm waiting for a spike in nitrites to see if my ammonia converting bacteria have colonized

When the nitrite spike happens, of course you can use Prime to help detoxify that too :)
