When the nitrite spike happens, of course you can use Prime to help detoxify that too :)

And salt.

And lower temperature

I just read somewhere that I shouldn't detoxify the ammonia or nitrite because the non toxic form that is converted cannot be eaten by the BBs. Gosh this is frustrating! haha. I'll just do the simple water changes everyday. I'll also take everyone's advice (lower temps and add salt) and also feed my piranhas once a week. I hope they don't eat each other! haha.

This whole process should take a few weeks. My dad didn't clean my driftwood or plants, so their should be some bacteria on them; maybe that is why my ammonia levels are stable at 0.25 ppm. I just hope the bacteria colonize in the filters soon, so it can stay at 0 again! Thanks everyone for the FAST replies!! Any other suggestions would be great =)

it will probably take less time then that depending on how stocked you are did he clean all your filters?

IMHO you should not believe everything you read, especially when you can't remember where it came from. Believe it or not, there's a lot of crap out there (especially if you are looking on the internet).

Prime binds ammonia and nitrite until biofilter can remove it. It does not affect cycling AT ALL. It does not prevent the biofilter from converting it, the way it always does: ammonia --> nitrite --> nitrate

Thanks for the help. I will go to the store tomorrow and buy some Prime! hehe :)

prime converts ammonia and nitrite to safer bio filter available forms.... seriously dont cry about a 10$ bottle that can save your fish.... also look into products after you add the prime to help boost your bio filter... seachem stability is a good one and cycle has worked for me in the past but i prefer seachems....

I wanted to try Marineland BioSpira, but that was just discontinued. Now there is Tetra SafeStart, which is the same manufacturer of BioSpira. Or I might try Dr. Tim's One and Only, which is the main scientist of BioSpira! hehe. The scientist and manufacturer split up to make their own :screwy:

You could also buy a bottle of bacterial supplment and not have to wait for the cycling to happen. Stability works well and should get your levels down in a day or two.
