Hi Fin Banded Shark

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
they are really really slow growing fish they can get up to 36in but that will take years and years there life time is about anywhere from 25 to 45 years most of them never reach there full size because it takes sooooooooooo long for them to. Oh also they are actually a cold water fish but are also able to live in warmer water, but not tooo warm :D

there are so many reasons why keeping this fish are rong.its much worse walking out of a fish store with this fish than it is a blood parrot cichlid.among the reasons are that its on the endangered species list in china and has never been raised in an aquarium.it also is a cold water (but not sold as one) species and would not be any happier in a warm tropical tank than a comet goldfish would.(how warm do you figure the rivers in china are?).you should only consider buying this fish if you just happen to have a 300 gallon tank committed to goldfish or if you live in a mild climate and have a pond.weve already had this debate on the other fish forum i have a membership at.i suggest anybody interested take a look.http://forums.fishindex.com/showthread.php?t=36869

As of this morning my hifin has ended up MIA. Looked everywhere for him. He is no longer in the tank. The only suspect is the leichardti, but his stomach doesnt look real full, either way hes gone... :(

I have always wanted a hi-fin banded shark (Myxocyprinus asiaticus) but never got one due to size reasons. I have only seen one individual for sale and it was rather expensive but if I had the POND needed to house one I would have bought it.

According to fishbase.org they are not really coldwater, they are listed as subtropical and able to survive at temps anywhere between 32F and 82F. They are not on the IUCN redlist.

I have read they they are in fact bred in China and Japan and have special breeding zones established. As for an average aquariast breeding them, I would say it is next to impossable it not impossable.

anybody who reads all the info and still purchases a hi fin banded shark is one aquarist who makes the rest of us look bad.

first why tell anyone how to spend their money or make them feel bad for the
fish they choose to keep.
second who do we make you look bad to the fish stores who lie to sell fish, the people who dont have aquariums cause they think its too hard to keep fish alive, or all the people on thier high horse who think they are better than you at keeping fish.
third i say ill keep what i want when i want and until you buy my fish and equipment dont worry about it. :swear:

bob_tom,

That's a difference between "making people feel bad because of the fish they choose to keep" and "making people know why they should choose another fish to keep". I don't see it as "telling you how to spend your money", but as telling you that you can be wasting your money and that you may be helping in the extinction of a species.
If you knew most baby SA arowanas (not to say all) are taken from their parent's mouth when it's fished? They're not just taken but the adult that holds them is killed, meaning that his bloodline ends there. Some people wouldn't buy a baby silver or black if they knew it. If I tell it to these people, am I saying how to spend maney, or making them feel bad for buying a baby aro? No, I'm telling them something they deserve to know, since it's important to them.

i say ill keep what i want when i want and until you buy my fish and equipment dont worry about it.

Well, I think you should say it to the F&W staff... Or the CITES guys. Would they think you're right? Some species have an enourmous potential to destroy the native ecosystems if they're released in the wild. Others, like the zebra plecos, can't stand the capture rate needed to make the exporters happy. I KNOW they can be bred in captivity, but ALL fish you get from Brazil are WCs, not tank breds.

That's about information, not about telling you what to do with your money or to make you feel bad about your options, but to inform you what your choices really are.

Best regards.

Daniel.
