Hi from Montana

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Welcome to MFK. At that size I would def. consider keeping FW stingrays as bottom dwellers and a black or silver arowana as top swimmer. Check out the forums for details.

i didn't know a stingray could live in FW? that might be a cool addition to the tank!! how big do they get?

what about drift wood? does the tank need some or is it just for looks? my pH is a bit high here, approx 8-8.2 and i wondered if drift wood would buffer my pH lower?

Driftwood is not required but looks nice. It may also buffer the water a bit but fresh water fish are somewhat more tolerant of PH. Of course that comment can open a can of worms from the "purest" test tube type guys but remember I'm the guy that runs unfiltered tap water right into my tank chlorine and all..........

Fresh water stingrays are very popular on the fresh water side of the fence. They are illegal where I live but you should be fine up in Montana. With a 500 you can have a nice sting ray set up with 1 or 2 Aro's at the surface.

where do you find your fish? my LFS doesn't have any of these kind of fishes. i've heard you can get Petco to order but i really don't like to support them..... do you guys get your livestock online?

so you think i could have 2 arowana in my tank? a black and a silver?
i need to do some reading on FW rays.....
thanks

Check out the market place area here on MFK they ship. So far (knock on wood) I never received a dead fish. Most have live guarantee.
If you have the cash I recomend Black Arowana, they don't seem to get drop eye and don't grow as large. They still get big, mine is 28 inches or so. Silvers are nice too

"They still get big, mine is 28 inches or so" --- so how old is your fish? do you think it'll get 3ft+? is there a way to know if it will get blue or just have fin color when they are young?
