Hi Guys,

I have 6 albino bichirs in a tank with 9 Melawi Cichlids, 1 moonbeam gorami and 2 Sumatras.

The Melawis are 6 electric yellow and 3 elecctric blue.

Anyway today I found 1 electric yellow dead and with a chuck taken out of him with eyes missing, the Bichirs and the melawis then proceeded to rip him apart as I watched. The Sumatras and moonbeam seemed unterested in the meal so I guess it wasn't them.

I have the Cihlids in the best water parameters they have ever been in and 3 days ago I put some nice fresh plants in there. The bichirs are probably a 3rd bigger than the Melawis and themoonbeam is around twice the size of the Melawis.

What do you guys think happened? Should I separate the bichirs from the rest?

get the bichir there own tank they probably bite the electric yellow.

By what do you mean by "best water parameters"? Do you have higher ph or low ph. If low ph then the african cichlids could have died from low ph and the bichirs took advantage of the dead fish.

Gouramis and african cichlids needs different ph.

Malawis and Polys don't mix in first place....Split the polys or the Malawis into another tank....

What do you mean by not mixing? Do you mean their characters are not suited, can you please explain more?

As far as moonbeam goramis needing different water parameters I'm not really concerned, they are an extremely hardy/adaptable fish that can go with almost any ph level you put them in. I have one in my well filtered Malawi tank and another (my nieces) in a glass jar. They both seem equally healthy and eat well when fed (when being the key word as I feel my niece forgets sometimes).

pH is different their nutrional needs are different. Polys eat fish and any Malawi not watching its back can get eaten (as you've seen). And Also more passive polys may get beaten up by malawis.....

Most Polys Enjoy Slighty Acidic water.. So Thier water parameters wont suit/compliment each other.. :)

But if Bichirs are in less acidic water it won't do them any harm right? I thought that the Malwais would be too big for the Bichirs to have a go at? I do have another tank with a week pump that is empty and the bichirs could go into but is it really a must? I mean they looked so good together.

I think I'm concluding that it was the gourami that killed the yellow Melawi. I was watching the tank and saw that he was ramming into anything that moved including the palmas. I have read that this is a result on generations of captivity and selective breeding. He's now in a smaller tank with a Beta, I figure he'll be able to hold his own being such a psycho and all and the tank has a couple of good hiding spots.

Bichirs are not from acidic water it is more of a neutral/basic water (not as basic as malawi) and it is really just not a very good mix of fish you have....And you may loose your Betta
