Hi nitrates help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
the gold nugget came from a local pet store. I got him about 2 months ago. I do have my own test kit, and I also took some water into another local pet store and there readings were the same. they are the ones that told me to try the coppersafe stuff.
I am running a HOB marineland bio wheel 200 rated for 50gl tank as well as a 18in airwand with a whisper pump. I really dont think it is my equipment as I have had it running for about 2yrs now. It took me about a year to fully stockthe tank. I took my time did not want to overload anything. All the fish that were in the tank yesterday have been in there for about a year or more except the gold nugett which went in there about 2 months ago. When he went in I took a commom pleco out so he was just a replacement. just sucks cuz he was my favorite fish he looked cool.

Only other change I have done was I built a new stand for my tank. The new stand will hold 2 tanks one on top of the other. I did the move from the old stand to the new stand on sunday which is when I do my water changes. I drained the tank down about 70% and saved all the water in a large clean rubber made trash can I use only for my fish tank. I left my airwand running the hole time and only turned the filter off once the water level got down low enough. once the water levelwas down me and a friend swapped stands. Then I began to refill the tank with the old water minus about 20% to go ahead and do my water change fior the week. Everything was fine untill I noticed my goldfish swimming kinda funny the following day but all other fish seemed fine untill yesterday when the 2 died all of a suddon. You all know the rest.

well uggggg I take that back now the 4th pimcat is dead. He was swimming around just fine about 15mins ago,but I just went in there to look at him and he was floating at the top of the tank.

Did you get rid of the goldfish yet ?= HUGE bio load

No I have not got rid of him yet but I think he will be gone by tommorow. I have been planning to get rid of him for a while just had not got around to it. But I think I will make that happen. The bio load now is prolly not a problemeven if it was before as there are 5 less fish in the tank now. And the tank has been so stable for so long I just dont get this crazy outbreak. I just hope I dont have to start from scratch, but I got a feeling that is what is gonna happen.

It will take a few days for the params to change from removing fish, Or atleast however long it takes to change out all there detritus and add fresh water.

Howdy,

The nitrates did not kill your fish.

Did you do a water change recently? Might have had a bad batch of tap water.

If it was me, I'd do a complete (100 %) water change and dose bacteria (Sera Nitrivec). There is something else going on other than your nitrates. And a full water change is the best way to get rid of waterborne contaminants.

Well it turned out to be a total loss on the tank. Everything except a 2 small cory's, and a chi algae eater died. Still not sure what caused it to crash so quick.
Yes I did do a water change wed night as that is when I noticed the fish looked a little stressed and I checked water and saw nitrates were high. I did a 20% water change 3 times to reduce nitrates, thursday night is when I found first 2 pim cats, the gold nugget died fri morning, the other 2 pims , goldfish, and angle fish died last night. the clown plecos I have I moved to my hospital tank one of them died this morning and the 2nd one is still alive but not sure for how long but he does look better.

Now for the most amazing news of all. I called the LFS that I got the Gold nugget from and told them what happened. Can you belive that the manager asked me to bring the body in along with a sample of my water and that she would replace him for me for free. No kidding I was amazed. I told her that I would deff. pass the news around and do everything I could to get them more bussiness, so I got to put the plug out and not sure if it is allowed here or not but

Animal jungle in Va beach, VA will get all of my bussiness from now on. If you are anywhere close to there please stop by and check them out.

Howdy,

Sorry to hear about the almost totl loss of fish!

You know it's bad when a goldfish dies. And this was definitely NOT the nitrates!
