Hi Guys!!

New to the forum, just thought I'd say hi and introduce myself! :)

Well bit about me, I've been into aquariums since I was 12 and now I am 23!
Started off with the oscars and other african cichlids and the in the recent years moved onto saltwater and tried the whole reef scene. I'm not saying I'm an expert or anything just telling what I've experienced.

I've recently stepped back into the aquarium game by upgrading my 55g tank to a 125g (4ft x 2ft x 2ft) tank. I am thinking of starting my first monster tank if you could call it that, but not sure yet what to start with.

I've been researching arowanas and my initial plans are to get a jardini because they are the cheapest arowana we can get down here in sydney, and I really want an arowana pretty much.

I know the basics of the amonia>nitrite>nitrate cycle because pristine water quality levels was vital with saltwater setups. any other specific water advise re arowanas would be awesome to hear.

Once I'm sure that I can take care of a jardini I was thinking to move onto a silver as I like their body shape compared to the jardini and also because price wise that is the next step up to a jardini.

haha sorry about the life story, just didn't want to post repetitive questions that has been asked a million times before and get flamed about them!

but to the point, would a 125g tank suffice a baby jardini? at what size should i be looking to upgrade or re-home?

im looking to take delivery of my new tank this weekend and will be interested in putting in those latex rock backgrounds? would I be better off not putting this in for cosmetic purpose and leave more tank space for the jardini? also looking to get fine white sand as substrate? has anyone used this before? or are there potential issues with sand as substrate for jardini's?

Also don't really have space for a sump at the moment so my filtration will be 2 cannister filters (why 2 you ask? because i already had a 1500lph one running in my old tank and I've been given another cannister with my new tank) I've been told and read on the net that running 2 cannister filters is quite possible and people do it all the time aparently? would love a sump just need the space.. hehehe..

sorrryy for the long conveluted post! hope your input can help! =) and HIIII again!! :headbang2

Hey how you goin mate, fellow sydney sider here welcome to MFK :D.. wondering where your getting your jardini from, i know of a few LFS around that have them going for like $90 for 12cms and $180 for larger ones..
A sump would be ideal, however running 2 cannister filters is fine, remember you can never "over" filter your tank lol ;)
best of luck with your new tank and dont forget to share pics.

Heya Buddy

I just hopped onto this site recently as well and yes another Sydsider. Just got hold of a juv Redtailed Catfish and Tiger Shovelnose Catfish. Housing them in a 4 x 2 x 2 but will need to move them into a pond in the not too distant future. I'l post some pics soon. Cheers

hey silverdragon - what a co-incedence your location notes your filo, hehe so am i, live in the wester suburbs. i've got my lfs that can get them pretty cheap (pretty much cost price) because i've got some credit with the owner. i can get a 2ft sump pretty cheap ($70) but I don't really have the room right now, nor do i know enough about how they work (pumpwise).

allanda1 dude the RTC & TSN grow huge!! they will definately be monsters!! looking forward to pics man.

good to know there are locals in here!

question i forgot to ask - is it ok to use t5 lights on freshwater tropicals? i'm planning to re-use my old lights from my saltwater setup thats all, will they be too strong though?

You guys not into leichardties? I prefer them over jardini maybe because they're not common over here. Are they common over there? If so, maybe you can ship some to me...:grinno:

well i really haven't seen a full grown lei to compare - but i think the colouration is better on the jar?

from what i've seen in real life i think the jar is a bit more brown/golden coloured and the lei is lighter/silverish coloured? i might be wrong though.

the body shape is similar right? apart from their rareness over there in the states is there any other reason you prefer lei's over jars?

i'd gladly swap you a lei for a silver arowana, over here silvers sell for $350-$450 minimum for small ones. =)

I like the red scales leis develop as they get older and also the fact that they can comm with other fish. Most jars also have little to no barbels which is a nice characteristic of the arowana i like. $400 for a silver? :nilly:
Small silvers average $20 where i'm at. I'll be more than glad to swap bro. I wonder what shipping would be...

o0o so you're saying the colours on the lei are better when they are older? wow didn't know that i'm going to look into it, i was told by my LFS owner that jar's had better colouration..

also didn't know the barbel thing because most of the jar's i've seen were only young and the barbels look huge at that size.. hehe..

$20 thats nuts man, i wish they were even double the price here.. ><
