You are not perchance using strip tests instead of drop tests?

i am using the API freshwater test kit

i know guys breeding stingrays and other fish in nitrates 100ppm and higher... 40 is nothing... i would be concerned if i saw 300 on my tank... but then again i through all my test kits out and dont bother checking my water params anymore...

Test your tap water, before and after treating it. It may not be anything you did, but the water company may have changed something. Testing the tap water can at least confirm or deny it.

i have let it go thinking that since it is new with BRAND NEW media i would let it go alittle longer before cleaning for the first time BUT guess that isnt such a good idea!

when i clean the fliters should clean the FX5 this week and then the cascade filter next week OR clean them both the same time going to be ok?

i just dont mess with my bio stuff. i still rinse out the filter sponges... i guess i shouldn't tell you how nasty it is just from 3 weeks.

If you want to lower your nitrates further, increase your water change volume and or frequency. High nitrates have very little to do with dirty filters. As you can see there are many experience fish keepers who go long periods of time between cleanings of there canister filters.

Nitrate are produced from the breakdown of ammonia to nitrite then to nitrate. You could reduce the nitrate levels by removing waste before it can break down, but this would require cleaning the mechanical media every few days.

Your nitrate levels are not that high, try increasing to 50% changes and see if that helps with your levels.

I very rarely clean my filters as long as they flow right, plus as far as I'm concerned that's all beneficial bacteria, plus as someone else said I think slightly dirty filters clean better, not to mention I always find a way to makeshift my filters and add extra carbon or extra filter floss, don't panic bro you will be fine and I would clean out 1 filter at a time not both at the same time you want to stay steady while the other builds up it's bacteria and it's proper dirty levels for optimum filtering.. but than again that's just what I would do....

why does everyone let there canisters go so long without maintenance?
Good question I was told to let my eheim 2215 go 3 months and its been like 2 and the fine media is almost completely collapsed with debris :D (on a 55 gallon with massive filtration besides the canister)
