High Nitrate

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
For smaller tanks like this, I have always used a clean 5gal bucket. And don't forget to dechlorinate. If you do use a bucket, you'll want to buffer the water before adding it. Wait..is this or isn't this an african set up?

i was told 10% water changes a week, also is there a faster way of adding water in the tank rather than waiting 15 mins. for a 1 gallon bag to get to the right temp.? thanks

LOL are you ****ting me bro!?

Take a hose and drain water into toilet. Then fill up 5 gallon buck from sink or hose. Put in water decholorniator and dump in. Repeat 5 times.

This whole process should take no longer than 15 minutes.

i actually connect my hose to my sink and dump water into tank and treat water inside tank after its already in there.... Please slap who ever gave you this terrible information. I feel bad that you have been doing this. Go on youtube.com and watch how other people do water changes.

temp shouldn't phase the fish, just do your best to match temp.
Dechlorinator takes seconds to work.

Bucket brigade it 50% weekly, just to maintain equalibrium. If you want to affect change, lower the nutrient intake, dilute more effectively(more frequent wc) or treat the nitrate either biologically or other. Nitrate redutor towers are very effective but somewhat expensive. Chemical absorption is just temporary.

i agree with all above..you need to change more water each week. and dont depend on the chems the companies are scamming you into thinking u dont have to do water changes

10% is WAAAAAY to little. This is EXACTLY why you are having nitrate problems. Canuck's toilet analogy is spot on. And what's up with the bag of water deal??? Match the temp out of your faucet as close as you can, dechlor, and call it a day :D

ya it is a cichlid setup tank, and i wasn't sure if it was fine just to dump water into the tank without using the dechlorine first, thanks a lot guys !

Put the dechlorinator in first then fill up. Buy some Prime, ALOT of people use it. You would do a 50% WC then dose the tank with Prime then fill back up. Simple as that. :)

I'm going to take out about 40% of the water, then i will fill up a 5 gallon bucket with new water and add the dechlorinator in the bucket and mix it up, and then syphon the newly mixed water back into the tank. Is this ok and efficient?

no need to premix prime, just add a shot to the tank, wait a couple minutes and begin filling with a hose or whatever
