High Nitrates in chiclid tank...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
As stated, weekly water changes should be the first approach. Second, ditch the carbon media and expand on bio-media or foam, or a little of both. For one thing, carbon has a very low life in an aquarium and can potentially have adverse effects if it is not replaced on a regular basis. Carbon should only be added if you intend on removing something, usually meds.

Depending on your water params, here is a helpful scenario: Let's say you do water changes on Saturday. Wednesday, do a reading, and if nitrates are high, treat the tank with a dose of Prime or Amquel (or any other conditioner that address high nitrate levels). Then do your water change as scheduled.

Good advice throughout..........

Also, it seems like you expect the Eheim (or any filter) to do something about the nitrates (lower them? eliminate them?). That won't occur with any filter. Nitrates are the end product of the nitrogen cycle in a freshwater aquarium.

Something is amiss...... As noted, the nitrates aren't nearly high enough to be killing your fish, and they are generally harmless except at much higher levels. Have your water tested at a LFS. You kit may be faulty, and I would bet your tank isn't cycled properly.
