High nitrates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Wow! Yeah, like Jose (jcardona1) stated, you might want to do a pretty big water change really soon! You're not going to get rid of all the nitrates at once, so keep checking and doing more water changes as needed to get the parameters back under control.

Good luck!

What's your nitrates out of the tap? Some places can have 40ppm+. One other thing, are you sure the test kit is good? Are you followind the directions EXACTLY as they are written?

Wow, Jose, you're on top of it :) I just thought of the experation date too...but, you beat me to it :)

And you actually got me on the tap water nitrates lol.

Good questions...

The test kit is less than a month old. I followed the EXACT same directions cause I know doing it incorrect can have issues. I'll test the tap right now. And by big how big of a change do you guys mean?

JUST KEEP DOING 50% WATER CHANGES EVERYDAY UNTIL AT LEAST UNDER 40 PPM 20 WONT HURT. THERE WILL ALWAYS BE SOME KIND OF NITRATE IN THE READINGS BUT 80PPM IS VERY DEADY. GOOD LUCK.

I'd say do 50% on a daily basis, until you get them lower. But check your tap water first to see what you have...

Man, that's really high! Won't really be able to get it lower than that. Forget the fish, that's not good for your health. I'd call your water company and ask for an explanation!!!

^ this.....very true. I'd be more concerned about you than the fish. Unfortunately your just putting as many nitrates in as you need to take out. Bottled or filtered water for you. How big is your tank? I've used nitrazorb with pretty good results. It recharges in a warm water salt solution. Might provide some relief till you can sort out your water situation...... Not really a solution, but a pretty good bandaid....
