High Nitrite Level Help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A Dalmatian molly, 5 adolescent guppies, 5 neon tetras, plecostomus, swordtail, and an angel fish about an inch big. Oh yeah my wife's ghost shrimp.

So my lfs had fluvial biomax ceramic rings in a self contained bag that looks like will fit well in filter picked up 2 50 gallon bags one for each filter also picked up 2 pieces of fluvial bio-foam am I going in the right direction?

Yep sounds good. Just need something to house bio bacteria. Find a way to fit the bags of media in the filter and your tank should finish cycling

Thanks again. Now have a bio bag (ceramic rings) and bio foam in each filter housing. Should I just keep doing water changes until this takes hold or are there any other precautions I need to take to keep all fish safe and healthy I don't want them suffering?

I just did another 25% change and nitrite levels are still high 3-4 ppm, nitrate around 7 still and amonia at about .15 ppm, ph 6.8, are my fish in danger or am I worrying to much?

Have you checked your tap for nitrites?
You should also wait 12 hrs after WC to check water parms .
If water hasn't cycled, you should stop feeding every day

I have switched to feeding once every other day. Starting Yesterday, and I will check my tap water for nitrites right now never even considered that. Thanks

Yes, fish are in danger with those levels. However, if you can keep it down with changes you'll be fine. Your cycle is not quite complete, but the presence of nitrate is a good sign.

I wouln't so much about bio filtration. You're set up quite well, especially for the stock you have. Keep in mind that your undergravel filter is using all of your gravel as biomedia..and they were used successfully for many years before anyone dreamed of paying for overpriced ceramics.
