It doesn't give a false positive for nitrates. It will cause a positive for ammonia but what you are actually seeing is ammonium which is what you get when the prime binds to the ammonia. Ammonium is harmless.

I didn't say nitrates was his issue, its the ammonia in the water that's the issue. I was stating that prime gives false positives sometimes so he may not have as substantial an issue as it would appear to be.
