I used a couple bags of African cichlid sand for one of my tanks and it’s at 8.8 ph. My normal water is 7.6. Is 8.8 too high for some CA cichlids? I’m sure some species wouldn’t mind at all. Which ones, if any, should I avoid because they have prefer softer more acidic water?

It will be ok. In fact most Central Americans come from higher ph. Lake Nicaragua has been tested with a ph of 8.2-8.9 for example

South Americans on the other hand is a different story but even then most captive bred ones and even wc ones can acclimate and its best to keep ph at a constant value

I live in Panama, the shot below is the pH and nitrate of the water where I live.
You'll notice the normal range pH reagent (left) was overwhelmed, so I had to opt for the high reagent

And I was out collecting in the Pacora river the other day, again the normal range reagent (left was overwhelmed.
Middle vial ammonia (undetectable) the vial on the right nitrate(also almost undetectable.
