High Temperatures

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
No AC? Sounds like a nightmare. I keep my house @ 69 - 70 at all times. Electric bill is high, but to not sweat is priceless.

Unplug your heater and put a fan or some to cause the surface movement also open the top. Last summer I ran my tank almost the whole summer with out a heater.

Eh? Perhaps and only maybe its the sudden spike in temp change that could kill them but I doubt that...IMO

I used to keep my temps at 85+ all the time, all year long. Convicts are hardy pluckers too. I used to have only one hose so I'd fill with cold water up to certain point and the rest with hot scorching water and my thermometer would read 95+. All ok, all the time.

Can I see a picture?

Its a right old bodge job, but it worked and should give you an idea or two. The tank is just for fry and naughty small fish really and has an annoying lid with no flaps. All I did was cut a hole in the lid and duct taped the fan on. It has two holes behind the lid for filter/light cables and that is where the air draws in. Ignore the other tape on there, thats another story.
Ive actually taken this off now, but put it back together to take a pic.

Take the lid off of the tank. Replace it with a 10gal terrarium screen and point a fan at the surface of the water. This is a common problem with sw tanks. The evaporation from having an open top will keep the tank fairly cool.

I wanted to do something like that with mine but the light is enclosed in the lid and it grows low light plants very fast in this tank, at only 15w.

The fish didn't die from the High temps. It was from lack of o2. Of course it could have been other factors but in saying just temp related

POOPIES! That reminds me I gotta go clean my tanks.

Yeah, high temps=lower O2 levels...when it gets super HOT in the fishroom/garage like 120 degrees, I no longer have my HOF on. I have extra air bubblers running

I keep all my tanks at 81 degrees without air stones and have never had any issues with O2 levels. I doubt it was your oxygen levels. Could have been, but unlikely.

There is some debate on whether a sharp increase in temperature can cause shock. I personally believe it can. Others believe only a decrease

A fan will only keep the tank temp a couple degrees below the room temp. My vote is to turn on the AC. Even if it only keeping the temp at 80, it would probably greatly reduce the chances of putting your fish into shock.
