I added a channel cat with my small koi and 2 clawed frogs, this was about two weeks ago. The catfish ended up having ick.

I always add salt after a water change but usually half of the recomended dosage. After I did my last water change I added the recommend dosage.

I also used what I think is malach green, the petstore sells the product in a unlabeled bottle. I assume they buy a large quantity bottle of something and break it down. I used this after two water changes. The petstore told me they use this in all their tanks and they had frogs, but I was still unsure of I should use it. I ended up using it with charcol with the medicine thinking it might be long enough to kill the ich and not harm the frogs. It did help with the a little but it came back.

Should I use this medicine without charcol? The frogs didn't seem to mind it. Can the frogs handle 87 degree water? They are between a year or two old.

I would not keep koi and clawed frogs together at all. Koi are cold water fish, they are happy in the 60's -low 70's range. Yes they can swim in very warm water but it is not preferred. Clawed frogs, should be kept more like a tropical fish in my opinion. I would need to look up if the frogs can handle salt. I have a feeling they do not like it because of there skin.

Always remove charcoal when treating a tank. Then add once the treatment is over.

Hi,

In addition to the good advice given by Z Trip,: malachite green and related not suitable for frogs, nor is salt; ACF very tolerant, but both will break down the skin's mucus covering, leave frogs open to infections. koi produce quite a bit of ammonia, which will affect frogs before koi (they absorb over entire skin)...even keeping frogs alone, ammonia should be watched, partial water changes impt. They can tolerate 87, (frogs) but far from ideal...more susceptible to bacterial etc attack at these temps. I've worked with AFC in zoos/home for over 50 yrsa..several have lived into their late 20's..very hardy if needs are met. Pl see this article and let me know if you need anything, enjoy, frank

So can tolerate 87 degrees until the ick is cured?

There are 6 small koi and 2 small channel cats in there until they get a little bigger and ick free. I have been using salt since I got them almost 2 years ago. My readings are fine before I put the koi in it was just the two frogs an two minnows they never ate in a 55. The frogs have always been active and had a good appetite.

Thanks for the article.

I raised the temperture to 84 degrees and used the medicine with the charcoal. The frogs survived and the ick was gone after a day. I just took the heater out of the tank.
