I don't know anything about pumps. I need to know which are good and which to stay away from. I have a little giant 3mdqx. I'm looking for a higher flow rate because I'm putting an Ocean Clear inline and that will definitely require more power. Right now i have a 240 with a 40 gallon sump wet/dry that i need to move water from an then thru the OC.

in the reviews that I read, both on and off this forum, I was sold on a Supreme Mag Drive Pump, by Danner. Goes up to 2400 gph on one of them. I ordered the 1800 gph yesterday.

Mag Drive's (submersible)
Quiet Ones (submersible) (These are what I use for my sump pumps)
Reeflo (external in-line)
Iwaki (external in-line)

There are others, just not coming to mind this morning.

Probably you want to stay with an external pump, plumbed through the side of the wet-dry, as that would probably be easiest to plumb.
Little giant's are nice pumps, but they don't have particularly high flow rates.

And not only is ReeFlo a high quality pump their customer service is second to none and the pump and motors are American made.

You can email them with your setup/requirements and they will help you select the right pump.

Don't use a Mag Drive with Ocean Clears. I tried it and it didn't work. They are great for sumps though.

Can I build a "U" out of PVC and use an external pump without drilling the glass.

No, most of them are not made to run dry, and they may not automatically siphon the water over the glass wall of the sump. If you can't drill the tank, then go with a submersible pump sitting inside the sump (either mag drive or quiet one), then plumb it through the canister.

i will sugest to look at panworld or blue line pumps, i have experience with few different pumps, iwaki, poseidon, mag, eheim, tunze recirculation. For your aplication i will go with with a panworld pressure pump, i've set up two ocean clear with a 100px panworld and have excellent results, before that i had a 150px but it was too much flow so i took it down, as i said you need a pressure pump or high head what they call them. Oh i forgot to tell you my set up 220 gallon with two ocean clear and a eheim 2250.

I use a Quite One external with my Ocean Clear canisters. I also use a PVC U hung over the side of the tank. Put a valve down stream from the U before the pump. Close the valve fill the U with water then put it in the tank without letting the water out. Hook it up to the pump and canister open the valve and let gravity siphon water to the pump then turn it on. Don't forget to bleed the air with the small valves on top of the Ocean Clear. When you need to clean the canister turn off the pump close the valve then drain and clean. If you don't let the water level in the tank go below the U it will hold the siphon and you just need to turn it on to fill the pump again.

Don't know if you can see it in the picture but that is what I have done. If I can round up a camera I can post better pics later if you want them.

P.S. I have been running this setup with the same pump for about ten years.

I run a 1/15HP Wave pump on my 240. The flow is so high that the overflow box cannot keep up. The water level is touching the lid. I had to defer some of the water back into the sump. Per the flow chart, if I add an element filter this pump would be just right. 3000gph/3.4 ft head at 1.3 amps.
