HIH early stage help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I read once that it hasn't been proven that the presence of carbon in the filters (throughout the fish's whole life) can cause HITH, but introduction of carbon (midway throught the fish's life) can. I agree, 50% bi-monthly isn't enough, more like 50%/week. Also, what size tank is your oscar in? Two 75 gallon filters is irrelevant if it's a 300 gallon tank.

Edit: nevermind, I just reread your first post (reason #1 for careful spelling). Isn't a 75 a little small for an oscar and a severum?

They seem to to be fine together in the 75. I have started doing 50% w/c every week and turned up the temp and it seems to have stopped, and maybe actually starting to heal its hard to tell he doesnt hold still for long.

i do 30% water change every week on my oscar tank and filter the new water through a nitragon which takes out nearly all the nitrate and phosphate
Your tapwater should have 0ppm of nitrate. If it has nitrates I would contact your municipality

Meluvmeosky- Keep it up and your o will heal! Nice work. Oh I always do about 60-75% on my water changes. If I'm gonna pull out all the stuff I really make it worth my while. Just be sure to match the temp and ph when doing such a large change!

cheers

canuck, nearly all the tapwater in the uk has some nitrate and phosphate in and now also has chloramine aswell! not very good for fish i must admit thats why in most cases it is best to filter it first, although oscars are so hardy they dont really need it,but if i've got the gear i may as well use it, i wish we could have tapwater like yours:drool:

Yeah, also the presence of flouride in our water is what you want too.Thats one reason the U.K.s teeth are known for being jacked-up!!
