It may simply be that a change in diet has triggered breeding because the fish think the season has changed? Like in the wild there will be tons of food when summer hits and fish will breed more. Perhaps that is what they think has happened?

Agree with this statement,when you switched food they started eating more (trigger 1)then the seasons are starting to change(trigger 2)then you probably did a water change(trigger 3). That is how i normally get my fish to spawn,change thier diet and then do several large water changes and its let get busy time.
