just out of interest has anyone seen hip bones and the head dent on large ray 15inch and above or is it just something that shows up on small rays below 10inch

I'm pretty sure it is for all rays at any size if they are too skinny....i think before head dents and hip bones is the noticeably very thin tail which should be really thick.

i only ask as my big female eats but not enough to keep her alive

she has never been bred with as no male is big enough to take her on

for the last few months 3-4 she has ate a little and i mean a little maybe 1-2 shrimps per dayand still no hip bones or dent

i know smaller rays lose weight faster but the ones we see with hip bones and dent cant have been feeding well for 6 months +

Hey sorry to hear about that, do you have pic of the ray? Hows her tail is it nice and thick if so, I was told large rays can go a number of weeks with out a meal because of all the nutrients stored in the tail.
Is thier something bothing her, tankmates, water...
If anything you might need to isolate her, removal of tank mates or moving her to a tank. Hopefully someone that has sting rays has better advice, could be something internal.

Am I right in thinking the ray in question is the least active of all your other rays?

Also I know you have substrate in your tank as I do, are there any small Snails living in your tank, I have thousands of these critters which I am convinced the rays feed on whilst pounding the substrate, these could be supplementing her diet if there are....just a thought!

funny you should mention snails as when i cleaned my jap mat out the other day there was loads

nothing has changed in the tank and no male harsses her as she wont stand for it

she has always been the less active

she doesnt jump on prawns or pellets like she used to

but after everyone else has fed she seams to go around eating the soft pellets

i think all rays slow down a bit with feeding once they are fully grown at 5 years

i was feeding a full mug of pellets and a plate of prawns per day but now still the plate of prawns but 1/4 mug of pellets
i just put it down to selling the 3 massive gold tinfoils but i now have the shoal of tinfoils back up to 7 and still 1/4 mug of pellets the tig is loving the extra left over food

she is still eating but not much

i know this is another strange one but has anyone else noticed that males seam to let preg females eat first before they feed

My 16 year old Marble female feeds as well as ever, all my other large older rays are the same, they all feed like pigs in all my tanks, all are on pellet too.
Your big female obviously has a poor appetite. This can happen to any animal, the fact she is inactive will stand her in good stead, she won't burn the weight off nearly as quick as she would gliding round the tank continuously as many do. She is obviously taking in enough nutrition to keep her weight reasonable.
I don't know where the hell these little Molluscs are coming from as I don't use live plants, probably some second hand gravel brought them in but they must be on the menu for the rays, I also first found them in my pre-filter, felt like grit, they are so small.

Regarding your last query I would say the insatiable appetite of a gravid females means they are always going to be on the food first, few people these days have manners, I'm sure they don't occur amongst Stingrays.

As soon as I open the cover glasses to feed the big female attack every ray in mid water male or female she flips them and moves them out of the way of the food drop then jumps on the pellets eats one prawn and leaves the pellets
The 2 preg females then do the same to the males
The preg females then get a good feed then let the males in to feed
The large female will then move in and eat any left over soft pellets
She is def eating as the fils are pumping when she is over the soft pellets

She has always been aggressive like this at food time but never been a great feeder

We will see what happens but nothing has changed and nothing is harassing her

Is it possible she may have ingested a stinger by accident or has one stuck in her mouth? That could be why she waits and goes for the softer foods. There have been a few guys post on here where their ray's appetite diminishes and then they see a stinger stuck in their mouth. One guy actually had the stinger come out through the top of the rays head and used pliers to pull it out. Said the ray started eating like a pig afterwards.

Just a thought.
