hip bones on large rays

Is it possible she may have ingested a stinger by accident or has one stuck in her mouth? That could be why she waits and goes for the softer foods. There have been a few guys post on here where their ray's appetite diminishes and then they see a stinger stuck in their mouth. One guy actually had the stinger come out through the top of the rays head and used pliers to pull it out. Said the ray started eating like a pig afterwards.

Just a thought.
This is a very good point and quite possible other than what Richard is saying is she has been like this for a very longtime, ray barbs break down rather quick once discarded so I think unlikely in this case.

Could have an object stuck in her Belly Richard, which puts them off food, sometimes they swallow something lets say for example a hose sucker attachment or something similar if they struggle to pass for some time put's them off there food, just a thought..when they get older rays still feed the same,i have 12 year old rays that would eat me if i fell in the tank!!

Gravid females are always top dog's at meal time.

ive got the snails in filters to,millions of them in my filters, never had plants or sand.

And I was thinking it was just me that had a Snail problem, makes me feel better that you two have as well lol !!
Snails are very good for eating small particles of uneaten foods so they aren't as bad as it may seem, I will have to keep rotating the Megladoras to keep them in check.
Sounds like a trip to the City general for an X-ray on the ray...EX-"RAY".....get it?

Poor joke!

I do not see snails as a problem, I have them too but it is no surprise that there are none in the tank, my rays sift the sand at night, in the morning the sand has little dimples throughout. I found some full grown snails in my backup external so I think they are where they breed and then pick up from sump.

I think my snails came in on this filter as it was on a previous tank to mature.

I have been looking in to other snails that I could breed in the sump as they are perfect rays food IMO

so strange i have tons of little snails myself always thought they ate them but was not sure....

Rays do indeed eat the snails. Take a few of the bigger ones from your filters and stick them into the main tank. The crunch is actually pretty loud and entertaining.

come on boys i have been playing the ray game a long time and looking at the underside and mouth area is the first place i looked

as for eating something there is nothing in my tank for her to eat apart from the background and my female leo is the only one who does that

this big female is prob 24inch disk and has never been feeding great for the past 2 years i have always wondered how a ray that eats so little can grow to near 7-8 inch bigger than the other female the exact same age

the snails who knows were they come from my substrate was brand new and i also have never had any plants
the laver must come throw our tap water as even with new fish i net and put in the tank

I do not think we have Malaysian trumpet snail lave in out tap water, hope not. I think netting a fish will not stop snail eggs as they attach to things. They are very hard to eradicate so assume they get in onthe tiniest amount of water.

i doubt they come in through tap water and you use filtered water anyhow t1 ? . snails spread so easily it only takes one peice of equipment from an infested tank to transfer them and even when you clean them you never get all the eggs unless you sterilise it before adding it to the new tank.

i know it will be hard but i bet she would feed better if you were able put her on her own. she may be intimidated by the other rays or just one of them and be just keeping out of the way of the others. you know what they say... an active ray is a happy ray if shes not active then why not ? and if shes not happy then it would stand to reason that she might not be eating properly.

as an after thought... shes female. ofc shes crazy :D
