Probably had a maternal instinct kick in and responded like it would if it where its calf.

Crocs and Hippos usually leave each other alone. Crocs know the Hippos could bite them in half in a second.

I saw a show on National Geographic where a Lioness adopted a baby impalla and treated it like its own baby for like a MONTH or something.
The Lioness was starving too. She never ended up eating it, but it was killed by another Lion instead.
