I've researched hith for quite some time and have posted a lot of info trying to help out fellow members Well guess what my emarld gourami had a small mark last week wich has turned in to full blown hith its a millimeter round already and as deep.
my set up has been perfect for some time now i even give my show fish vitimins and a uv sterlizer to ward off any bacteria i may introduce now i'm thinking since dwarf gouramis have a shorter life then most fish that if hith and age is a factor also gh and kh wich is a problem keeping stable in older tanks .
So with everyones assistance i'm going on the prowl for more info on hith and once in for all i will try to come up with a good article with some supportive edvidence of what causes hith in certain speices .
i would like any imput and links to find good reserch info pertaining to hith in different species this woulb be an article for mfk by mfk
so far i quite familar with hith in oscars and have heard of gouramis getting it and some random speices that were usally in poor conditions
so a good start would be if you've had any fish with hith ,what were they and what did you find was the cause.
once i get this together maybe we have it pinned in the health section.

One of the problems with uv sterilizers is they KILL EVERYTHING I have no evidence to back this up but maybe this could be an underlying cause. In my experience salt water reef tanks usually do better without a uv on them and maybe it is causing some type of deficiency in your fish.

Hope my idea leads to some new info

I was just going to post a topic like this!

Okay, I think alot of HITH knowledge is 'myth', atleast alot of what is passed through most petstores.

I agree that poor water conditions can worsen the symptoms, but I don't think it is the primary/main cause. I think it is more often times coincidence that poor water conditions are in connection with HITH.

I believe Hexamita is actually a Virus, but I could be very wrong.

The more factual evidence I have seemed to come upon is this; it is caused from poor diet, and is most often seen with fish that eat live prey, or have specialty diets in the wild.

I read here on MFK, from DW, that the main cause of the Hexamita virus was a Vitamin K defeciency.. Also in a related note, live feeder goldfish contain thiamine that causes the fish to not have the ability to process certain vitamins properly. (correct me if i'm wrong)

Some fish apparantly are more susceptible to this problem, such as Oscars, Discus, and Pike Cichlids..

This is all off the top of my head, so anyone can take it from here and put some more factual evidence to the HITH situation, I would LOVE to have an article to post on my website :)

i have had no luck with meds with hith with my os only things that worked were doing 30 % water changes for two to three weeks it will clear tith then i i also dont use carbon and keep the tank at 82 84 and a liitle tanl salt i feed three differnt types of food vit c rich foods bio gold bio blend omega one try soaking pellets in liquid centrume it has cleared the hith on my oscar and has kept it away for few months hith takes a while to heal also if the lesions are infected then use meds . My os were purchased at the same time one got hith the other never got it its like people some have grreat skin some have acne .

i agree miles hexamita is a suspected cause also spironucleues these are flagellate protozoans one of the main problems i've ran into is excactly what you stated poor nutrirtion and this has come from the use of gold fish and it has been linked because of the defiency of vitiman k also a few more related to chiclids then thers the issue of parasites from gold fish or and feeders also but i've seen it without these conditions a few times now i've wondered if it could be like a cancer i'm curious if there is any wild fish found with hith have you ever gotton any wild shimpments and found this .

i've thought that but thats the intent of a sterlizer bacteria is thought to be a cause
but i'm looking further into it thx for the imput

ITs vit c that helps lateral line and hith will come back its not always water quality its the foods you feed stress
