Hith with pikes?!?

One of the reasons black water fish seem to get HITH and other bacterial infections more easily and more often than other normal riverine water fish, is that the tannins, and lower pH in black water seem to inhibit certain bacteria from existing, and because the fish don't naturally carry immunity to those bacteria, they are vulnerable.
Creating conditions with high tannins using peat moss, sunken wood, or even tea may go a long way to keep HITH at bay, and induce healing.

Yes! I've thought about that too exactly that way! Like they're not immune. But then there's also the theory of carbon in the filters. I've added some natural tannin "amazon-extracts". No bog wood though because during WCs he runs into decorations like a skittish ATF 😴

I understand that logic to a point on wild caught fish .

However this still effects pond / farm bred fish... My opinion is HITH is a response to poor water conditions in smooth / small scaled fish.. Improve your water quality keep it consistent and HITH starts reversing itself ..

What about when people use carbon and their fish have hith? Then remove it and it's gone? Hexamitia?

As you can see in the picture i use a lot of wood in the tank and cattapa leaves, have 3 grown out atabapa 2
and 5 psittacus and they are doing fine.Change water 60% every week and have a eheim 2260 and 2075 as filtration.
Never had a problem with sick fish.(cross fingers). The tank is 140gallon.Not so much light in the tank as well. That is function wery well for
the fish.Good luck,atababo 2 are fascinating fish.

I agree water changes are the most important factor for all fish, but the fish from blackwater habitats pose special concerns, and even though a species has been tank raised for many generations, this does not negate millions of years of evolution in waters where certain species of bacteria are a non-issue. I do believe with each generation of tank raised individuals a species can acquire some % of immunity, especially if individuals with immunity were able to be hand picked from each spawn, and bred together. This however is not often easily recognized, or a priority in the same manner as red or blue color, or extended fins. Look how long its taken to get populations discus that don't drop dead if you simply look at them the wrong way.
