Hk cultured marble gel coat

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I painted over the bondo fiberglass with epoxy. I don't know if it is safe, but a Guy who sells it for a living said it is not waterproof. It 's t super strong and with a coating on top it should be waterproof. Epoxy is 2x as expensive and when you start mixing it with fiberglass you use a lot more. I ordered 5. Quarts and started to Glas the interior. I ended up using all of the epoxy, now I have been stuck waiting to finish. I ordered some epoxy from Ace. When I went to get more the warehouse was out. The warehouse isn't scheduled to get more for quite some time. They wont ship it because of its chemical makeup. Last week I ordered a gallon and and half.of Max acr. I will let you know when if fill it. I don't.know.it.will.work, but I am 95% confident it will.

As for the fiberglass resin, I guess im confused if I can use the brand I can get at my local auto body store? Its made for cars and boats. I took a picture of the gallon. Do you think it will be a good choice for under the gel coat?

I was being purposely vague. The use of polyester resin has been something of a controversial topic here on MFK.

I haven't used that particular brand but others have used the readily available resins like that with sucess.

But at $20 per quart I do think you should look into some of the less expensive epoxy resins or ordering a higher quality polyester resin.

Max ACR is pretty cheap and their customer service and advice to plywood tank builders seems to be spot on.

US Composites has a variety of epoxy, polyester and vinyl ester resins.

I haven't shipped polyester resin in ages so I'm not sure if it's subject to haz mat shipping charges. Epoxy resins don't have haz mat charges so that would save you money.

How much resin do you think you'll need?

$20 per quart will get you a long way if you need at least a gallon of sealer.

Idk ill seal roughly 40-50 sq ft if I don't do the outside of the tank as well. This resin was 40$ for the gallon. Id really like to not ship anything if I have something that will work locally even if it is a little less quality

I can certainly understand the convenience of working with something you can pick up locally. If I were in your shoes with access the the gelcoat I'd probably go ahead and use the local $40 per gallon resin as well. Even though I have used cheap polyester (with no topcoat) to seal plywood tanks in the past I'd probably still use the gelcoat if it turns out to be safe.
