hma filter with kdf media

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i drip in 200 gal per day and change them every 3 months with no problems

i think the 3 stage removes all the normal stuff that tap water conditioner does and heavy metals

Right you made me paranoid about this cooper in the kdf as I was thinking it was a new thing added

I called Colin's water to ask if the cartridges had changed at all in the past 2 years

The cartridges are the same as they have been for the past 2 years it's just the housing that's changed

The coconut carbon kdf mix is the same as it always been so the same cartridges I have been using for the past 2 years

yeah . the KDF is the same stuff they have been using to treat water for human consumption for years but that doesnt mean that it isnt made from copper. it was designed to make water suitable for human consumption.

copper is as i understand it an algicide and biocide so it kills germs and algae just because its copper. but in even to humans it can be fatal in high doses ,causing liver and kidney damage and even death ( according to this site : http://www.globalhealingcenter.com/heavy-metals/dangers-of-copper )

so from what i can gather the advantages of the kdf filter are that it uses copper (and zinc) to kill bacteria, algae's and fungi (isnt that what the chlorine in our tap water does ? ) . . .. so , if your drinking it yourself straight from the filter then yeah thats fine. but if your leaving it in a bucket over night or maybe in a fishtank for a day then its going to want treating again isnt it ? the water isnt constantly running through the filter after all. its just topping up.

it seems that people are using the hma filter to take out things in tap water that are potentially harmful rays (like chlorine etc) by using something that is even more harmful to rays (ie copper) to do it :s

like you said before, the activated carbon elsewhere in the filter most likely removes most or even all impuritys cause by the copper but ..... what if you over run your filters . what if you ( or anyone else ) put the filters in a different order. what if the carbon in the filter is used up particularly quickly for some reason (they put extra chemicals in tap water from time to time right ?) or something else ?

as far as rays are concerned is the copper containing KDF media a good way to filter our tap water ? or would it be better to just run the tap water through carbon based filter that doesnt contain KDF media ?
or even two types of carbon filter like this one - http://collinswaterproducts.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=110&products_id=147 *no KDF version*)

ive already made my choice but i wondered if it would be of interest to anyone else.

if you do over run the cartriges then surely the cooper will be finish nothing more

i also done resurch on the other stuff in tap water and someone done some test and said that most stuff gasses off if you have high airation in the tank

i dont hange things unless they are broken and like i said i have had over 10 pups born in this HMA water and all pups would have been more sensative to cooper than other adult rays but all pups were born and fed great so its up to you how deep you want to go

the pups say alot for the water quality but i think its just the basic carbon in the filter that is getting rid of the harmful chemicals that are in the filter itself. im not sold on what actual benefits for rays or even fish in general that the kdf can offer.

the general idea is not to treat unnecessarily so putting copper in the water just to take it out again seems daft. ( for humans fine but for rays imo no )

thanks for your comments t1 . they helped me decide for sure what i wanted to do with my filter.

maybe you should send one of your pups over here on a permanent stay (next time you have them ) so they can see how they do in my water conditions :D :D

thanks again t1

Well RO units are daft to me you remove loads of stuff then need to add stuff again to make the water safe for fish and you need to dump lots of the water

all water treatments seam to have a up and a down side its what works for each person that matters
