HMA Filters

Hi All,

I picked this up from another thread but wanted to know more about it... What exactly do HMA filters like the one below do? On reading it looks as though they basically do the same as what I currently use PRIME to do for me? I.E Remove Chlorine,Chloramine, amonia etc... is this correct? if so would it be a good idea to just set up a drip with this? does this affect things like PH or any other parameters in a negative way? I keep stingrays a tigrinus and peacock bass fyi.

Hi sam, I started using one about a month ago, sadly I cnt setup a drip system so its a bit of a hassle using the hma, I have mine running into a big water butt and then pump that into the tank when I do my wc's. I still use prime just to be safe. So much easier if you can run one on a drip system

That's wrong it may mess with your ph

If your tap water ph is high then your tank water will end up being the same as your tap water

Before I set my tank up I used to have a 350 g with normal water changes my ph used to sit at 7-7.5
Now the new tank has the drip changing 200 gal per day my ph sits at 8-8.5
This isn't a problem and rays adjust very fast

The only problem with a drip is its hard to get the flow right and you will find your heaters are on more in the winter this isn't a problem in the summer as you adjust you temp with the drip

I don't know why people call it a drip as mine is more like a slow trickle

It's not just a case and buying a HMA and off you go you need a tap nearby and you need to drill your sump with a overflow pipe to a main drain

And yes it will do the same as prime

They're fantastic, I got the idea from T1 about a year ago, I use the devotedly discus model.

It is more complex than buying a hma but not much more complicated.

I have a water connection about 10M away behind the fridge, we out a splitter in the pipe work and attached it into the in let of the hma, on the outside comes the thin tubing like that on a RO, we ran it along the ceiling and into the top of the tank, it ends up in the sump due to the weir and will overflow the sump, SO, you drill a hole a few inches from the top where the water will overflow out of directly to the drain.

In the winter it can be hard to keep the temp up on such a mass of water but in the summer it's nice to have it to cool down, last summer I had my hma on full blast to keep temp down.

If you get a measuring jug and a stop watch you can work out your flow and adjust for what ever % water change you want.

If you normally do 50% a week do more with this method as the clean water is diluted with dirty water and so you overflow clean water as well as dirty so it's not as effective as one large water change.

I've not done a water change for 12 months, changed my membranes once, due again soon - you know when because the flow will drop and the water gets dirty
