Even in such a large tank, and the space. if you go w/ Angels good chance they will pick off neons, when they get big. I'de go abit bigger, personally I like rummy-nose tetras. Though a fire eel in a planted tank has some wow factor. 
tbh it's compareing apples and oranges to me. I love my planted tanks, and I love my predator tanks. For very different reasons.
Or the best of both worlds find a predator that does well in a planted tank. tbh the only ones that come to mind are wolf fish, but usually it's a single species tank and of smaller size. I'm sure if you wnated to lean down that route some people will have some ideas for you.

Do whatever you want to do, it's gonna be in your house not mine so why does my opinion matter? As far as the girlfriend goes, I reccomend the method I use with my wife when it comes to my fish. "It is easier to beg for forgivness than to ask for permission"
