hey everyone i have an extra emperor 400 hob filter, i have it running on my 125 gallon tank with a large canister filter. i just put the hob on there for some extra filtration. i am using just plain carbon filter cartridges in the emperor 400 and the filter has 2 bio wheels.
my question is could i put some biological media in it and not use the filter cartridges and just have a biological filter? my goal is to not buy anymore filter cartridges but yet still have allot of extra filtration. should i buy some bio balls or ceramic rings? or what would be the best biological media for a hob filter? or is this even a good idea?
how should i do this?
thanks! hope to hear what everyone has to say about this!

Yes just put ceramic bio or whatever u can find, a few handfulls no carbon.

Always good to have a backup incase one fails

You could put them in a media bag to at least keep them all together.

I run Purigen, sponges and bio-max in my HOB's.

So... I'd suggest bio-max in a media bag.

Your Emperor 400 should have come with a gray media basket. You could buy another set of those media baskets. Then you could fill one with bonded filter pads cut to size and another with biomedia like Eheim Substrat Pro or Seachem Matrix.

Once I had a penguin 200 and I just filled it up with ceramic rings. This provided a little mechanical and mostly bio filtration. It worked well and kept parameters in check, but was really nasty when I decided to clean it. A media bag would have been a great idea.

Those would work just fine, just in case you don't find your basket or even if you do. If you are ordering media then may I suggest you go ahead and puck up a 100ml "in bag" purigen:

It's a great replacement for carbon and definitely a good partner for the biomax.
