It depends on the tank. My 75 gallon has thicker trim on the sides, so I had to cut 2 slots in the trim for it to fit. Like other peole have said you'll need powerheads to help circulate more water, mine let a skin build up on the far end of the tank due to lack of water movement.
Oh yeah, an AC110 (500) needs more like 4 3/8-4 1/2" clearance, so if you measure your tank out 4" and fill it before putting the filter on, you're going to be pretty p*ssed off.
