HOB filter performance?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The best feature of AC's, I think, is the diversity and amount of the media you may chose to run them. It comes equipped with a pretty large filter box that you can stuff with practically any media.

I operate a mini farm out of my garage and run AC's on most my overstocked tanks. They let me grow 500+ PBs in 55g tanks to 2 inches and 200 angels in 40g tanks to about a half dollar in size.:)

They do a wonderful job of providing mechanical and biological filtration. If u chose to do so you may also run them to do chemical filtration.

Hard to beat their cost effectiveness. U can get AC 500 for under $ 30 in some places:D

If overfiltration is your thing You may always run multitple ACs and still save mucho $.

I have a Eheim 2213 and a AC 110, if there are any pieces of plant/poop the AC defenatly gets them first, I have also had to peal a few fish off the intake strainer, healthy fish i might add

ac500 or the emperor 400 with 2 bio wheels. Which do you think has more bio filter. On my ac i put a row of bioballs to block the water flow then added 2 packs of rena filstars! I think the ac has alot of space for media. Does anybody know how effective the 2 biowheels are compared to good media?

Thankyou for the advice. Now obviously with a HOB filter there needs to be a gap in the aquarium cover, is there a good way of making sure there are no gaps?

It clearly states on the box and all literature - as well as Hagens site that its 500 gph...

Take my word for it- otherwise start wagering money on it - no less than $100 please

I can scan the image at anytime

that's odd, i'm sure my box said 428, and here it is stated by drsfostersmith, http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=3610&N=2004+22769

it's actually on a lot of places on the www that says it's 428gph so i know i'm not dreaming, perhaps they made a change to it, well i did get mine 7-8 years ago, i'm not surprised if they did change it

I would be more inclined to believe what is posted on the actual mfg's site, the box and manual before all others (websites). I also have the manual from approx 15 or more years ago (when they first came out) stating its a 500gph unit.
The AC 110 states 500 gph today....I tried telling you that the websites were wrong before hand. Now you know

my box actually said 428 and it was posted everywhere in the past because that's what the product's specs were, after a bit of reading i found out it was that the old AC500s that were rated for 428, i find it hard to believe you have a 15 year old unit that was rated for 500gph...alas it is a tiring pointless discussion, if you want to insist on who is right or wrong, you win

The AC500 came out 15 years or more ago. I remember when they did because I was using supreme aqua kings and couldnt wait to use something that used less energy. The 500 gph was listed then, along with suggested size tanks up to 150 gallons (box and manual). They mention tanks up to 110 gallons and its still 500 gph rated. Not sure where the 428 came from but in the begining they were clearly labled 500 gph, and they are labled the same today but called the 110's. They are the same (500 & 110) in every way still today.
Im just telling you how it is and was - it was how you were correcting me that need correction. I really dont care either way or if you believe it or not....

Now with statements like this, how is one supposed to let things slide?

Here you go a 15 year or older manual (higher res. is available because this site cant support large files). It clearly states up to 150 gallon tanks and 500 GPH (you have to look for the statement but its there)...

Now its a dead horse...

all i'm saying is there were in fact AC500s that were spec'd at 428, i don't doubt most are rated at 500gph

seems like Hagen pulled the wool over our eyes, perhaps it was only a limited number of 428s
