I recently changed from gravel substrate to sand. My hob filters have been off for 1 1/2 days waiting on the sand to settle. Will it be ok to turn them on or should I put new filters in them. They are roughly 1 week old. Im running two penguin 350s. and my water is still a little milky from the sand will it hurt to turn on my filters to start circulating the water or should I wait until its cleared up. first time using sand so still trying to figure things out. Thanks in advance for the info.

Mmmmhhh... I personly don't use sand because it damages Hobs impellers, eventhough you place the Hob intake far from sand surface it eventually gets sucked damaging the hob.

If you insist on using sand then I'd advice you to get yourself a canister fiilter instead.

Cheers.

Yeah I agree im intending to buy a canister in the near future when I pick up a bigger tank here shortly. this is going to be my growout tank.

A canister and HOB is going to be damaged in the same way by sand, if sand gets into the system. You don't say if you have fish in the tank. If there is not fish, and the HOBs had been running for one week before you switched them off? If i am reading that correctly? Just switch them on. I would think about adding a pre-filter to the intake of the HOB to keep sand out, if this is a concern for any reason.

Correct me if Im wrong but HOBs get damaged pretty easy when sand gets into the equation because the Hob impeller is in the bottom/floor of its box so sand is irretrievably going to get to impeller's well damaging impeller, shaft and motor.

On the other hand Impeller in a Cannister is located on top of it so simply gravity is going to prevent sand to get the impeller well.

Being this IMOE to use a canister is safer than a hob when sand gets into the equation.

I turned the filters Off when I had to let the sand settle they were off for 3 days and the filters were a little over a week old but I flipped them.on and everything is running smooth

You need to think about the bacteria. If they were Established filters, then maybe your BB died. You will probably go thru a cycle again

The bb can die off that quickly? I still have the driftwood and the slate rock from the previous set up in there. I know bb is in the filters but isn't it on the substrate and the driftwood as well.
