Do what I do with my tanks that have sand...I put a sponge over the intake...ive had plenty of filter imoellers break on me because of sand and since I put sponges on them I havent had a problem

The bb can die off that quickly? I still have the driftwood and the slate rock from the previous set up in there. I know bb is in the filters but isn't it on the substrate and the driftwood as well.

Correct me if Im wrong but HOBs get damaged pretty easy when sand gets into the equation because the Hob impeller is in the bottom/floor of its box so sand is irretrievably going to get to impeller's well damaging impeller, shaft and motor.

On the other hand Impeller in a Cannister is located on top of it so simply gravity is going to prevent sand to get the impeller well.

Being this IMOE to use a canister is safer than a hob when sand gets into the equation.

Must you always point out my stupidity? :) Seriously though, you're right never thought of that, but still, I dont want sand in my canister.

^^Lol you're not stupoid I didnt say that....:D Youre right that the most desirable scenary is not having sand in neither of them, nor HOB nor canister.

Cheers.

good idea with the sponge filter over the intake didn't think of that and water stayed in the filters while they were off so the filters stayed wet.

Depends on the canister. Rena's are not affected at all by sand because the pump is at the top and the last thing in the chain.....sand would have to travel down to the sediment tray and then up through compartments full of sponge, bio and filter floss. My cichlids literally spit sand directly into the intakes and it has no effect. I just dump it back in the tank during filter maintenance.

PFS is better at staying out of hobs because of the larger particle size.

Very true. Still, keeping sand out is a good idea. Its funny, I had a Midas cichlid who would spit sand into the intake for fun to listen to the sound the sand made as it entered my hobs and canisters.

Wow, what a punk.

I've had my tank setup for 7 months with a firemouth. I have tahitian moon black sand from CaribSea and I've yet to have sand get in the impeller. The intake tubes are about 6 inches from the sand, and my firemouth is constantly sifting the sand. I have aquaclears though, not marineland. I'd think you're fine to run them, but as someone else pointed out, leaving the filter off for a day may have killed off some of your beneficial bacteria.
