It will not harm your filter to run it on low. I have actually let mine run
(by accident) dry overnight. They get a little warm, but they still pump water just like when new. You can turn the flow down all the way, but when you do, the filter will literally drip water. You should place it on medium, which is when you are looking at the filter from the front, it will be horizontal in between High and Low.
