HOB or Canister filter

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
depends on stock to me. If you have the standard non monster community tank then an HOB will be fine. However with monster fish comes monster cleaning and tank upgrading. So if you plan on getting a bigger tank get the best canister "your" money can buy.

2 ac110's and a powerhead and you will be good or 2 powerheads if needed. Powerheads go along way

I'd recommend a canister. I have a few aquaclear 110s. They work well, but are kind of loud. I guess other people have had better luck with their rena xp4. I had trouble with it getting air in it and water up in the filter head. I replaced the O rings and checked to make sure the hoses were the right length. It still persisted, so I gave it away. I have an xp3 that has been working well though.

I'd recommend an fx5 or 2 eheim 2217s. I have one of each and they both work really well and are very quiet.

What do you mean by power heads? I have two 402's sitting in a box and right now I have two sponge filters running off of an air pump as well as a Fluval 305 and I also have a HOB sitting in a box that I was thinking about throwing on for additional mechanical filtration. How do you run your powerheads? Do you run sponges on them and decrease the flow of them so it doesn't just suck everything right through the filter or ??

Powerheads be used as a sponge filter, however I think he was talking about using powerheads to blow the debris towards the inlet tube of the filter.

Ideally I would run a Emperor 400 or AC110 and something in a canister like a XP3, XP4, FX5. If you have a problem with one you have a backup, if you clean one you have bb in the other still. Running a powerhead of a sponge a pretty cool too, if the power shuts off the sponge hold the bb in the tank water so it can help out there too.
