HOB or canister?

I run a eheim classic on my 10g planted. Love it. Couldnt ask for more, and fairly cheap too!

I run a Marineland HOT with the micron filter and it keeps the extra particulates out of the water (looks like there is no water). I also run an old whisper 3 to clean up floating food and other matter. It is easy to pull out the media to clean often. This is on top of the sump filter for water quality.

If you are deciding between one or the other, the larger canisters have more power and water flow. But in reality, most use several types. So, just decide what you want for now. (Go as big as you can afford) You can (and will) add another type of filter later.

I would probably just go with the canister...if you have or ever do decide to do co2 the hob will just gas it out.

That being said...eheims are really great. It can go forever (esp on a planted tank) without needing much maintenance. All that nitrifying bacteria space gives your tank a lot of fertilizer. :D
