I have been using canister filter for almost 2.5 years now. I'm wondering if a HOB would work or even a sponge filter. It's such a hassle to take the canister filter out of the stand and take it apart to clean. I have an fluval 406 for a 60 gallon tall tank and sunsun hw 5000 for an 120 gallon tall tank.

Honestly, depends on your setup. Fish load?
If you are looking for easy maintenance then HOB and sponge are a good choice. I run only sponges on my 40g pleco breeding tanks
My 150 has a 2262 canister and a couple sponge filters.
I run Eheim air pumps and have them on Battery backups in case of a power outage. At 4w per pump they will run for hours.
Honestly, I’d probably throw 2 AC110s on the 120 and one on the 60 and call it a day. You could throw a couple sponge filters in there as well if you didn’t mind the look.

Your 60 gallon could easily do an HOB, an aquaclear 110 would be more than enough, even a sponge filter would probably be good enough. As for the 120, 1-2 aquaclear 110's would probably do the job, I'm not sure if cleaning 2 HOB filters is easier than cleaning 1 canister filter, though.
Maintenance of my 110 Aquaclear is about 8 minutes. I take out the Sponge and Bio Media and siphon the the filter housing and around the impeller area.
