HOB vs Canister filtration

^Interesting and informative.

Greetings from Fort Mcmurray! If you can get a good deal on a cannister, go for it. I got an Fx5 from petsmart a while back for$264 and love it! They seem to go on sale there all the time. You can also get used fluval 404's for cheap on kijiji and all the parts that wear out ( impellor, shaft, o ring,) are readily available at lfs. I love the aquaclear HOB's but dont like the noise. Plus if you go away for a few days it sounds like a waterfall when you come back. Good luck!!

i'm leaning towards the canister because it will be more out of the way plus the price is about 90 including taxes which seems to be a great deal. the noise is not an issue since it's going to be in the basement and even so i am used to the sound of running water with my 30 double HOB filtered about 2 feet from my head every night. The only issue is that i'm not certain about the size of the filter. i'm hoping it's a bigger one but given the price i fear it may be rated to about 55-75 and considering i'm gonna be getting african hap cichlids and maybe a few tough oddballs i want the filtration rated to at least 100 gallons if not more. i'm hoping its big, planning on getting it in about 4-6 days along with the 75. Nothing set in stone yet so still accepting advice.
