HOB vs Canister

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was actually hoping to get a bottom feeder!:D

Many bottom feeders have difficulty competing with active feeders like JDs and convicts. You end up overfeeding all the fish just to get the bottom feeder to eat. Bottom feeders do not clean the substrate well if that's why you want a bottom feeder.

The python no spill is the best "bottom feeder" there is.

they each have their advantages. but if youre trying to convince me an ac110 is better than an fx6 for a 75g tank i would strongly disagree.

while an ac110 is a workhouse, i think one is only really adequate for a 50 or 65 gallon tank at most. for tanks four feet and longer i think the fx4 or fx6 sized cans are great. much higher media capacity, much higher flow, a lot more freedom in placing the intakes and outputs which is my favorite quality of canisters. i dont find the maintenance particularly difficult. its more than a hob but worth it imo.

but i would use an ac110 before any of the smaller canisters. the ac110 provides good surface agitation with its torrential cascade as well.

I'm honestly just fond of the bottom feeder variety. That is a good point on the feeding though. My main goal right now is getting the 75 up and established to provide a better home for my current 2. I certainly have more research to do as far as tankmates are concerned. I like the idea of fewer larger fish vs a bunch of small ones.
