When changing the disposable filter cartridges on a 30-60 should you only replace one side at a time and maybe rinse the other side out a little? I read some where that this was best so you dont wipe out all filter media.

Is this for the aqua tech walmart filter??

Some may scold me for this but I just rince my filters inder luke warm water to get the crud off them and put them back in. I put in new 3x a year.

If you rinse your media with tap water, you are killing off all your bacteria! (unless you have well water) So don't do that! I try not to replace bio media, just drain some tank water into a bucket and use that to clean the excess crud off.

Maybe yes, maybe no.
To have such highly chlorinated tap water that would destroy all bacteria with rinsing would be a stretch.
Is it a bad idea to use some tank water to rinse your filters, no.
Is it a “must do“. Also, no.
There is this ongoing myth that a tap water rinse will destroy all your beneficial bacteria and throw your tank back into a cycle.
If your tank has successfully cycled, you have bacteria throughout your system, not just on any filter material.
Any die off, due to tap water cleanings will quickly be replaced as the bacteria grow to process the load.
Again, not a bad idea to use your tank water for “bio bathing”, but no biggie if you “tap” it.

I,m using a tetra brand for whisper called bio-bag disposable filter cartridges that you use activated carbon in.

Yes I am using well water. So sounds like i'm ok then to just rinse out but was wondering how long you can get away with this without replacing with new due to the carbon being used in these filters? Thanks for all replies.

The filter media those filters use is complete trash, in my experience. I got two whisper 60s and 2 boxes of the filter pads + activated carbon
The filter pads disintegrate after a few weeks, which makes it pretty much impossible to rinse and reuse.

activated carbon goes inactive between day 5 and day 7 cut out the carbon and leave it be i filled mine with a little filter floss. i rise mine every week ive had the same carstages for about 18 months now and some of my tanks longer

Don't worry about what other people think. If it makes perfect sense, then go for what you know. I use a kitchen sprayer to clean mine. I have some that are over four years old and still going strong.
