The land of the pine
I was fishing/collecting at a local river a little while ago and I noticed a dead northern hog sucker. Has anyone kept these before? Do y'all think I could put one in with my pickerel in my 60 gallon? I know very little about them and had no idea they lived in my area. Any info will help. Thanks!

I suspect that the pickerel would view the sucker as a prey item. They're natives that you can catch for free though, why not try it out and let us know? If the pickerel eats it, he got a nice healthy natural meal. If he doesn't eat it, then you have a very cool, unusual bottom feeder.

Win / win situation! :D

Ya if he does eat it, start putting a couple in there to fatten him up

I catch them with my casting net all the time.

The do get over 12 inches. They need fast current and gravel to nose through. Supposedly they are a sign of a healthy river.

Yeah, they are awesome. I'm Gunna try and get one around 6 inches. Once it gets too big it will go in my pond. My substrate is gravel and I plan on putting the power head I have lying around in there.
