Holding fish!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What was "he supposed to be? I would not add her back to the tank. She may breed with any male. I would find her a new male and a few female friends and do a species only tank on the side.

Thats great... i hope she does not have too many for you... usually first time small amount ..lets hope... :D

Her mouth doesnt look very full actually, I have seen pictures of holding fish where their mouths look 2-3 times more full than my fish. I can definitely see eggs in her mouth though.

Thats what I am thinking of doing mike. She was supposed to be a male Ngara Flametail. I was thinking about getting a couple more females and another "male" lol, I want to keep the male in the main tank though and just move him to the female tank when I feel like breeding. I dont know if anyone in my area would be interested in buying these, but there definitely is a lack of this type of fish here.

They are beautiful fish. Just because her mouth isn't too big doesn't mean much. It will get bigger as they develop and like Red Devil said if it is her first spawn it will be small.

It takes about 21 plus days to have fry and you don't know exactly when she started to hold .. her mouth will get bigger as they grow... and just before she spits the mouth will look quite swollen... and like HUTCH and i mentioned it will probably be smaller since it is her first time..but even if less babies when she is ready you will see the difference in her mouth...

Thanks Liz and Jhutch. I actually am 95% certain that she started holding saturday night, she ate and was acting normal on both friday and saturday during the day, then all of the sudden sunday morning she wasnt eating mouth looked a little full and she was very terratorial.

Why is it better to strip them rather than letting them spit on their own?

I strip them because I don't want to wait for them to get to term which could take as long as 40 days and if you do strip them after 2 weeks they will usually be holding again by the start of the 4th week.

Gotcha. Well since I dont have another male to even breed with her again (yet) I might just let her be and see what happens.

Should I get some more females or would I be ok with 1 male and 1 female (I would keep the male in the all male main tank except when I want him to breed with her.
