Got a problem with my 3-4 inch red snakehead. He had just a few clean, neat holes along his jaw & under the chin & so did his siblings, but they acted healthy. Now he's bigger & has more holes. But those arent't the only holes, He now has some wound-like holes on the top of his head which reminds me of hole-in-the-disease from my cichlids days. Siblings(still at lfs) don't have those. Can a snakehead get that?

Put some meds left over from my cichlids in the tank (metronidazole),but doens't seem to do anything. Should I try something else?

He was eating feeders, but I'm trying to get him to eat dried krill. Still eating really good, always hungary & moving about.

Help?

p.s. I'll try & get some pics

unfortunately , if it is the bacterial disease that eats the flesh away , there is nothing that seams to help it and in 99% of cases would result in mortality , you would know if it was this if any other part of the body becomes infected , it usually starts off looking like a heater burn on the skin ,then it turns red with bare flesh exposed , horrible thing and as far as i know there is no cure , this is one of the reasons Channa will be banned throughout the e.u , because they are one of the suspected carriers which the EU feel might damage captive stocks of fish , i believe there are meads on the market for hith but i believe at best you can only hope to stop it and not reverse it , all the meds i tried in the UK seamed useless until i found the miracle mud

Only bacterial meds I have right now is Jungle (brand name) Fungus Eliminator. I remember that it heals the same things as Primafix(close to melafix maybe?). I just bought the Jungle brand cause that was what the lfs was using themselves.

I'll stop treating with the HILT meds then. Got him earlier to eat a dosage spinkled on krill as a precaution.

primafix is a anti-fungal treatment , where as melafix is anti bacterial

Oh okay that the difference.

NO ONE use Jungle Brand Fungus Eliminator on snakeheads... Just put in it last night & today my lil guy was hiding/laying near the bottom, & refused to eat! I just did a water change in hopes of perking him back up. My poor Puppy...

P.s. I did check the Ph too, but it didn't seem to change since I put the meds in.

personally mate ,and i hope i am wrong , i suspect this to be eus (Epizootic Ulcerative Syndrome )and the reson why these fish are to be banned from import throughout the E.U. if iam right the fish is doomed there is no treatment that will cure this , i really hope iam wrong but with the new one turning up on its back it kind of confirms what i thought , i.e not hith , the problem if it is e.u.s is that what you see on the surface ie the spots is only half the problem , the real problem may lay in the internal organs and tissues of the fish , i would house him in a hospital tank by himself until you know for sure

guys its normal:D it is not hole in the head:chillpill:

Normal? How is gaping, red wounds normal on a baby? It may not be HITH, but something is definatly wrong.

I'll try to get more pics, but it is really hard to get them...those pics I posted earlier are the only ones out of 10's that I took that show anything but a blur.

Sometimes that depends on the camera
:)

Update: Holes are around his jaws & down his back now,but he's still eating & being an agressive brat. Camara refuses to take more pics. Also, I found out 1 of his siblings died from unknown causes(feeder?) & the others are healthy & showing no signs of sickness.

Sadly, while he still acts healthy, I have noticed more marks. Now he has more long, markings which are a blue/purple color on his head/back where the reddish wounds were. Thought maybe they meant he was healing, but they are more & larger then the original wounds....

Ok i have a book thats all about general fish care and this disease is in the book. It says the cause is "a parasite often found in the intestines which is usually harmless until the fish falls under stress, the water parameters are bad, or the fish is old. It says in order to cure it "Dose tank with perscription drugs Metronidazole or Di-metronidazole 50mg per gal miked with water before use; repeat after 3 days or mix with food. Vitamin A,C and E supplements will aid healing
Good luck

Yes, I love my lil darling, but sadly I don't think he's gonna make it after all. Just today he lost a chunk of flesh on his head and its all white. Still eating & swimming agessivsily though.

Did try adding those meds suggested to his water/food.
