I would have to disagree, HITH is a disease and can kill the fish if not treated.

Do you know this? Has anyone had an Oscar that died of HITH? I know that HITH is deadly and very serious when considering fish other than oscars. But when it comes to Oscars I don't know that HITH is that serious. If your oscar has an extreme case of HITH for an extended period of time, maybe he would die, but probably from the poor water quality, nitrate spike, not the HITH. I doubt this. :screwy:

Yes I have heard this, I have heard dozens of stories of HITH killing Oscars. Since Oscars are more suseptible to HITH.

Could you back this up with something? If you personally had an Oscar that died of it I might be more apt to believe you, but maybe you've read an article from a book about it, or on a website? Please tell us, I've never heard of this, and if this is the case, I have three Oscars that I would need to watch more carefully.

I would believe it. HITH comes form vitamin deficiency and seconday infections. It is definitely possible, although I saw one living that was missing half of it's forehaed.

I could also see an O dying from HITH. Mine had a fairly mild case of it but I treated it right off. The hole dissapeared. He has been fine since.

How did you treat it?

I fought HITH with my oscars for about 18 months. It got so bad at one point that I thought my red oscar would surely die, and I'm absolutely amazed that she didn't, but she came out of it with a nasty scar.

To treat, I upgraded the tank that my 2 oscars were sharing, a 65 tall to a 125 and kept a vigilant watch on nitrate levels, made sure to vary the diet with vitamin soaked pellets and frozen/freeze-dried foods and veggies and stuff, and started treating the old wounds with aquarium salt.

So weird, I screwed up initially by overcrowding the 65, but once the problem was solved my red oscar had a very tough recovery and it seemed like she would get erosions extremely easily after that. I had to keep my nitrates around 15 ppm or she would get holes.

First, I did a partial water change. Then, I put the recommended amount of Doc Wellfish's Aquarium salt.(Made for freshwater fish, also I used the dose Tropical fish treatment or with a remedy.) I put in the recommended amount of Melafix in the tank.( I also used the dose As a disease or wound treatment.) Quick cure. I repeatedly did water changes and added more treatment about every 3-4 days. I did all this for about 2 weeks. After the two weeks was over he was cured.

Mine didn't have a scar or anything, and I hope that answers your question ewurm.

Thanks, I don't have that problem, but I want to be ready. I over filter the tank and feed premium foods, so I think I should be good.
