hole in the head, diet and active carbon

I thought those holes are a normal part of lungfish anatomy and they become more noticable as they grow. Just because I haven't seen one without it and they are all usually arranged in the same pattern, depending on species. Would like to hear more about this though. What kinds of veggies do you guys feed and do you offer them boiled or microwaved?

I feed algae wafers in with the massivore and the holes have shrunk to nothing now.

Also i removed the active carbon from the filter just in case
