Ok, so I have never heard of "fishkeeping" except MFK before. You could be a fish enthusiast or own an aquarium. Maybe if you were fancy you would say you were an "aquarist". If you went to college for it you were a Marine Biologist.

Guess what, redirect now to something bigger and new:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fishkeeping

People like to take shots at wikipedia, but that's an incredibly good description of almost all of us. Well done Wikipedia contributers, if you ever read this.

I've been saying fish keeping and fish keeper for as ling as i can remember... On the other hand, i've never called myself an aquarist...

Then maybe you two aren't "fancy".. heheh.

Did I seriously miss that? I have NEVER heard "fishkeeper" IRL. I lived in Georgia, Pennsylvania and California and this site is the only place I have ever seen it.

Btw, when you say "as long as I can remember" please quantify that. Depending on how much, uhh.. apple juice I have had to drink, the amount I can remember fluctuates greatly.

same here.....i'm not as old as the other 2 who have responded but it's still been decades

Well that's three straight. I'm willing to concede it's just me then. I stand corrected!

my ma and pa were fish keepers before me, my great granny and grandpa were fish keepers before them and the lil ballins i have in the future will be fish keepers. we ain't no high class aquarists that don't like to roll up their sleeves and get wet.

Same here, well at least my dad was an avid fish keeper since his teenage years...

Also, seems all my friends have also said fishkeeping and fish keeper all their lives, so its funny for me to hear you've never heard the expression used outside MFK...

-edit-

Regarding OP's question how long as i can remember, im in my 30's so i would say a decent amount of time...

Yes it's just you...and.Eddie comes from a very long line of fish keepers and water change bucket carriers.

Fish keepers is informal, Aquarist is formal. Aquarist makes it sound like you are trying to make yourself seem better than someone, especially if they are lower class. thats why "Fish Keeper" is understandable to anyone.

For the same reason why Proctologists refere to themselves as "Butt Doctors"

Also, the article is very well written and mostly true. except I hate how they always refere to parrot cichlids as not being able to eat, swim or engage in normal social behaviours being deformed etc. those are the early fish from 20 years ago. I've never came across parrots that bad quality. they are usually spunky fish that are territorial and can hold their own. I wish people would just dispell that myth entirely
